Old‑School New West: Restaurants & Diners

Our city’s culinary memories—those restaurants and diners that have been around long enough to feel like part of the family, part of our local story. We’re going to revisit five classic staples of dining in New West that still serve up good food, warm hospitality, and a sense of belonging. If you’ve lived here a while, you’ll recognize some of these spots; if you’re newer to the Royal City, they’re a perfect way to tap into the flavour and history of our community.

A breakfast and brunch icon: Angelina’s Dutch Corner, located at 810 Quayside Drive Unit 122. Sitting right on the riverfront, this spot has been drawing loyal locals for years with its Dutch-style pannekoeken, fluffy waffles, and strong coffee. The weekend lineups are worth the wait—trust me. There’s something about the combo of riverside views, familiar service, and generous breakfasts that makes Angelina’s a part of many people’s regular routine. It’s where families meet, tourists stumble upon and fall in love with, and locals return again and again.

Next up is a genuine neighbourhood fixture: Amelia Restaurant at 640 12th Street. Known for its old-school diner vibe and hearty breakfasts, Amelia’s has been feeding locals for decades. The service is friendly, the portions generous, and the menu gives you breakfast done right. It’s open daily until 3:00 PM, so it’s the kind of place where you grab an early start and settle into a comfortable meal, knowing you’re in a spot that’s part of the community’s rhythm. Whether it's a solo breakfast or a weekend tradition, Amelia's has stood the test of time.

Now, if you’re craving something from the sea, Cockney Kings Fish & Chips at Unit 130‑66 10th Street has you covered. A cornerstone of Columbia Square Plaza, this place has been serving golden, crispy fish and thick-cut fries for years. It’s beloved for its consistently good food and unfussy atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you go for the food but stay for the feeling—warm, nostalgic, and always satisfying. Their all-you-can-eat nights are a New West tradition, perfect for a casual night out with friends or family.

Fourth in our tour is Burger Heaven Restaurant at 77 10th Street. This place is a local legend. With its playful burger names, generous toppings, and quirky décor, Burger Heaven has been a favourite for generations. The walls are lined with doodles, posters, and community notes, and the menu is full of juicy, handmade burgers that are still as good as ever. Whether you’ve lived here for decades or just moved in, you’ll quickly understand why this place is so loved—it’s quirky, casual, and timeless.

And finally, Taverna Greka at 326 Columbia Street. This family-run Greek restaurant has been serving New West since the early 1980s, and it continues to be a top spot for both locals and visitors. With its sweeping views of the Fraser River and classic Greek dishes like souvlaki, calamari, and spanakopita, it’s ideal for everything from quiet date nights to celebratory dinners. The space feels warm, welcoming, and truly local—and every bite reminds you why it’s stood the test of time.
